Listening to the Wisdom of the Tree and the Medicine of Silence

By Fernando Castillo

Dear children of the earth, in the fast-paced rhythm of the everyday world we often forget to stop and breathe alongside the true pillars of our planet: the trees. They are ancient guardians that anchor the land, unite the realms of earth and sky, and teach us to enter the Medicine of Silence and the attentive listening of nature’s spirits or devas.

I invite you to undertake this practice of deep contemplation and reconnection.

The Physical and Spiritual Presence of the Tree: The Sacred Encounter

To begin this exercise, seek the company or evoke the presence of a specific plant ally with whom you feel an ancestral affinity:

The Oak (Quercus alba / Quercus robur): Sitting beneath its canopy is to experience an unbreakable protective shield. Its solid, gnarled trunk transmits a serene authority, while its deep roots remind you that to rise high in life, one must stand firm in the ground.

The Willow (Salix alba): By the water’s edge, the shadow of the willow offers a haven of peace and intuitive welcoming. The drape of its branches invites reflection and shelter for our deepest feelings.

The Apple Tree (Pyrus malus): Standing under a blossoming or fruit-laden apple tree fills the air with a rejuvenating sweetness. It conveys the warmth of home, nourishment, and the immortal gift of the soul.

The Pine (Pinus spp.): The whisper of the wind among its needles and the cool shade of its branches provide an immediate sense of purification and mental clarity. Its upright, resinous trunk conveys perseverance and incorruptibility.

The Ash (Fraxinus excelsior): Standing beside an ash tree is to feel the presence of a true World Tree (Yggdrasil). Its noble stature conveys balance, willpower, and intellect.

The Lesson of the Living Tide: Patience, Solidity, and Flexibility

Trees are our great masters of the Living Tide and the natural rhythms of change. They do not fight the wind nor do they desperately rush to grow:

Patience and Unhurried Growth: A tree understands that the seed must sleep in the darkness of the soil before sprouting. Each year marks its rings without anxiety over time.

Solidity and Receptive Stillness: Like the oak or the ash, we learn to hold our center when the storms of life rage, trusting in the roots that feed us from deep below.

Flexibility in the Storm: Like the willow, we learn that true strength does not always lie in rigid resistance, but in the capacity to bend with the breeze without breaking and to recover swiftly from adversity.

The Botanical-Magical Correspondence of the Allies

In the tradition of herbalism and green magic, each tree holds a specific rulership and energy inscribed in its leaves, bark, and scent:

The Oak (Rulership: Sun / Mars; Element: Fire): Houses energies of strength, protection, health, wealth, and resilience. Its force manifests in the hardness of its Martian wood and in the concentrated vitality of its acorns, traditional symbols of fertility and abundance.

The Willow (Rulership: Moon; Element: Water): Channels intuition, love, healing, and lunar magic. Its energy resides in the moisture of its bark, in its flexible wicker branches, and in the vital force with which it sprouts anew after being pruned.

The Apple Tree (Rulership: Venus; Element: Water): Embodies healing, harmony, love, and immortality. Its power shines in the soft fragrance of its pink and white blossoms and in the five-pointed star sheltering the heart of its fruit.

The Pine (Rulership: Mars / Saturn; Element: Air / Fire): Imparts purification, banishing of heavy influences, vitality, and prosperity. Its healing force resides in the sharp scent of its needles and in its golden resin, a fossil memory that becomes protective amber.

The Ash (Rulership: Sun; Element: Fire): Brings sea and land protection, justice, balance, and willpower. Its medicine lives in its dark buds, its astringent medicinal bark, and the firm structure of its timber.

Your Commitment or Daily Micro-Practice

Integrate the guardian’s medicine into your routine through these three simple acts of reconnection:

Rooted Breathing: Close your eyes and take three slow breaths. Visualize your energy center in your chest and project tendrils of green light descending through your legs and feet, reaching deep into the earth to intertwine with the tree’s roots. Feel how you inhale the earth’s stability and exhale accumulated stress.

Fallen Wood or Acorn Charm: Respectfully pick up a piece of dry branch that the tree has naturally shed on the ground. Keep it in your pocket or personal pouch as a physical reminder of its strength and protection.

Silent Contemplation and Gratitude: Spend a few minutes each day placing your hands upon a tree’s bark. Silently communicate your intentions, listen to the rustle of its leaves in the wind, and say goodbye by offering a few drops of clean water to its roots as a sign of reciprocity and respect.
